Within moments, police stopped him and approached the car, where they encountered Hector A. Gomez, 36, a Lowell resident with a history of arrests for alleged drug offenses, records show.

Two city councilors who have listened to residents from across the city about their desired election models are pushing a hybrid election system ahead of next week's mediation session in federal court over the voter rights lawsuit. Lowell City Councilors Vesna Nuon and Edward Kennedy made a motion Tuesday evening for the city's attorneys, facing off with the plaintiffs next week, to propose a change to the city's electoral system -- from an at-large system to a hybrid model of district and at-large.

Last month, 11 students knocked on doors and talked to neighbors to gather 63 signatures petitioning for improvements to a crosswalk on Boylston Street, including a new paint job, blinking yellow lights for pedestrians and a crossing guard during school hours. "Whenever we tried to walk, the crosswalk and the cars never stopped," said Autumn Breslin, a fifth-grader at the nearby Pyne Arts Magnet School.
Police Briefs: Man charged in social media threat

A Gardner man was arraigned Thursday in District Court for allegedly threatening to murder another man using a social media message app, according to court documents. Adam Knowlton, 33, of 127 Baker St., was charged with threatening to commit a crime for a May 24 incident in which he wrote to another man not to come near his family, according to court documents.

Eyebrows were raised across the City Council Chamber Tuesday evening when Councilor Dave Conway brought up the state law for destruction of municipal property -- up to 2 1/2 years in the House of Correction. He also mentioned the monetary part of the statute -- three times the value of the damages.

Members of the jury spent nearly 11 hours in deliberation before they returned with their verdicts on six drug-related charges in the trial of 45-year-old Lowell, Massachusetts resident William Luna on Friday. The jury came in front of Judge Jacalyn Colburn at Hillsborough County Superior Court-South after finishing their deliberation with a split verdict.
