Manafort's workers have been taking part in Toys for Tots since 1997, donating toys or bicycles for needy children. This year, they have been raising cash to buy 100 bicycles from Walmart; the company itself has pledged to cover any shortfall if donations don't reach that goal.

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart paid a $500 fine to the State Elections Enforcement Commission last month for sending out a "promotional" brochure with a 2017 tax bill less than three months before her re-election. New Britain Town Democratic Chairman Bill Shortell said the fine doesn't make up for "the thousands of dollars of city funds" that were used for the promotion of the mayor.

Another scandal at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain is emphasizing the need not only for better management at the university but also for strengthening Connecticut's Freedom of Information law against the constant sabotage by government employees and their unions.  Central's latest scandal involves allegations of repeated sexual assaults by a university police officer on another officer, the university's failure to act on them, the university's hiring of several former Hartford police officers with poor disciplinary records, and general indiscipline in the university police department.  The officer accused of the assaults has been fired but Central is refusing to disclose the discipline imposed against the university's police chief and other university police officers - and the university may not have to disclose the discipline.

A case of bacterial meningitis, a potentially life-threatening disease, has seriously sickened a student at Central Connecticut State University , university President Zulma R. Toro said. Although college students typically receive a vaccine for meningitis, it only protects against four of the five types of Neisseria meningitidis, the bacteria that causes the disease.
